The 2008 United States Mint 50 State Quarters Proof Set ™ features five new quarter designs: Oklahoma’s “Scissortail Flycatcher,” New Mexico’s “Land of Enchantment,” Arizona’s “Grand Canyon State,” Alaska’s “The Great Land,” and Hawaii’s “King Kamehameha I.” This set is a shining example of the United States Mint’s commitment to quality and excellence. United States Mint proof coins are extraordinarily brilliant, with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special cameo effect. Proof blanks are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp, high relief. The coins are then packaged in presentation cases to showcase and maintain their exceptional finish. The United States Mint 50 State Quarters Program begun in 1999 produced a series of 50 quarter dollar coins with special designs honoring each state. Five different designs were issued each year from 1999 through 2008. States were commemorated in the order of their entrance into statehood. Each state theme was proposed, and approved, by the governor of that state. Final designs were created by Mint personnel.
